Why Mainspring Hall

What Sets This Workshop Apart

Written Consent at Every Step

Nothing is done to your watch without your written agreement. The report comes first; work begins only when you decide.

Photographic Documentation

Each restoration stage is photographed. You receive a complete visual record of the process alongside the finished piece.

Conservation Over Modernisation

Original components are kept wherever they can be made functional. Period-correct parts are sourced rather than modern substitutes.

One Watchmaker, One Piece

Your piece is attended to by a single craftsperson throughout. Continuity of care matters for heirloom work.

Clear Ownership Throughout

Pieces in storage remain registered in the owner's name at all times. Collection can be arranged at any point during the agreement.

Unhurried Timelines

Restoration projects run eight to ten weeks. Evaluations take a full week. The work is done at the pace the piece deserves.

"A watch kept in a drawer is still a watch worth understanding."

Bring It to the Bench

The first step is a conversation. Tell us what you have, what you know about it, and what outcome you are considering. We will take it from there at whatever pace works for you.

Common Questions

Before You Come In

How do I know if my inherited watch is worth evaluating?
Most watches that have passed through a family carry some meaning, regardless of commercial value. The evaluation service is designed precisely for owners who are uncertain — the written report will give you a clear picture of the piece's condition and provenance, which is useful whether you intend to wear it, store it, or simply understand what you have.
What happens during the evaluation session?
The watch is left at the workshop for one week. During that time it is opened, examined under magnification, and a written condition report is prepared covering the case, dial, hands, crystal, and movement. Where the maker can be identified, notes on manufacturer history are included. The report is delivered at the end of the week, and we discuss options together at that point. No further work is performed until you give written approval.
Can I specify how much polishing I want done?
Yes. The workshop is explicit about its philosophy before work begins: cases are polished lightly or not at all, depending entirely on your preference. Dials are cleaned using non-abrasive methods only. If you wish to preserve wear marks as part of the piece's history, that instruction is documented and followed.
How long does a restoration project take?
Sensitive restoration projects typically run eight to ten weeks. The timeline reflects the pace of careful work — sourcing period-correct parts where needed, photographing each stage, and allowing the craftsperson to work without rushing. We will communicate an estimated completion window when the project scope is agreed.
What if I am not ready to make a decision about the watch?
That is precisely what the long-term storage service is designed for. Many families inherit a piece during a period when larger decisions are not straightforward. The watch can remain in a stable environment at the workshop — in your name, retrievable at any time — while you take the time you need.
Is the pricing fixed, or does it depend on the watch?
The evaluation is a fixed fee of RM 510. The storage service is RM 720 per year. For restoration projects, RM 2,420 covers the standard scope; if additional work or parts are required beyond what was initially observed, this is always discussed and agreed in writing before proceeding.
